RIVER YEALM

The River Yealm is located a 20 minute drive east of Plymouth. It's a very picturesque location and one of our favourite spots to take beginners. Hills surrounding the river mean it generally remains sheltered and it offers flat water for several kilometres.

The River Yealm is tidal. You can launch at all states of tide but when the tide is out, you can only access a small section of water that leads out to sea. The river is best enjoyed at high tide when you can paddle up towards a nature reserve.

There is very limited parking in the two nearby villages and please be considerable of local residents when parking. A permit is required to paddle on the River Yealm and this can be purchased from the Harbour Authority in Newton Ferrers before launching. Beware of slow-moving boat traffic in the summer. In the winter, boats are almost non-existent and many of the moorings are empty.

Some lovely pubs and restaurants are located in nearby villages Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, with hot or cold drinks to enjoy after your paddle.

SUP South Devon offers guided tours of the River Yealm and surrounding areas. Get in touch now to book one of our limited tours in Spring 2022!
